Somerset Level flood recovery work continues tirelessly

Shifting the rubble that was once an internal house wall is just one of the recent tasks of the extraordinary team who make up Somerset Emergency Volunteers.

The versatility, cheerfulness and sheer staying power of those involved in the big Levels clear-up has to be seen to be appreciated.

Whether it was moving thousands of sand school bag in the early days of the crisis or helping to move people and possessions to safety as the emergency wore on these men and women have been available day or night. They are still working seven days a week.

For weeks the work has focused on helping put homes and gardens to rights.

At first the volunteers were "facilitated" by FLAG, the Flooding on the Levels Action Group which was formed in 2012 to campaign for better water management throughout the entire Levels catchment.

Now they are officially called Somerset Emergency Volunteers, and Somerset County Council is funding them with ¡ê130,000 to co-ordinate their efforts and make sure they are deployed where most needed..
